I need you!
I have this fabulous potato salad recipe but I called it “the best” only because it’s that good, not because I had tried enough to be sure it really was. But now I want to be sure.
Before the 4th of July, I am on a mission to find the BEST potato salad recipe out there. I’ll be testing recipes, but I need your help. If you have a fantastic potato salad recipe, please share a link to the recipe (or the recipe itself, or even just a list of the ingredients) in the comments. I’ll be making three of the most eye-catching, mouth-watering recipes we can find.
If you submit the “best” recipe, I’ll say thank you by sharing it (with your permission) here on the LOVE blog and by sending you a LOVE apron!
The famous chef, Daniel Boulud is growing vegetables in planters on the Manhattan sidewalk on Duane Street, right outside of his restaurant, Bouley! How cool is that? There’s tomatoes, various lettuces, broccoli, Swiss chard, mint, dill, dandelion greens – amazing!! And beautiful.
I wonder if people passing by will try to pick the tomatoes?

One of my potato salads is a departure from the usual. I do this one by eye and taste so I don’t have measurements. Here goes: Halve small, unpeeled red potatoes, boil ’till fork goes in easily. While still hot, mix in two big hand fulls of arugula that has been shredded into medium sized pieces. Add some kalamata olives, capers, fresh ground black pepper and toss with a mustard/shallot olive oil/balsamic dressing. Since potatoes are hot, dressing sinks in well. Serve at room temperature. Goes well with grilled meat and fish. Enjoy.

I have the same recipe and I make all the time. In fact, I even put it on my blog today as great party salad. However, I am never satisfied either. I am always looking for a new potato salad and comparing it to my go to salads. I think the secret to a great tasting potato salad it to flavor the warm potatoes with a dressing or pickle juice or some type of flavorful liquid before adding other ingredients..

Please look at the above recipe from Susan. I think you will LOVE it!

The secret to good potato salad is in the right mayo and the right pickle.

EVERYBODY has a potato salad recipe. Have you tried Paul Prudhomme’s potato salad? It’s worth a try. 😉
Mary Frances says
No – I’ll have to look that up. Thanks!

I make my mother’s potato salad as my old stand by. It has nearly a full jar of bread and butter pickles. I think that’s the key. I have the recipe here, http://ourlittlefamilyadventure.wordpress.com/2013/01/04/moms-potato-salad/
I also make a great German Potato salad but don’t have a recipe for it. It includes, red potatoes, apple cider vinegar, bacon, German mustard, and salt & pepper.
Mary Frances says
Thank you! The apple is an interesting touch and I like your flower design on top! I would also love to have a good German potato salad recipe

I think German potato salad is one of the easiest to make. I’ll be sure to post it to my blog the next time I make it.

Great! Thank you!!

My mother in law made the best and still to this day, my favorite potato salad. It’s very basic but she taught me two things. Mix all when the potatoes are still hot and use lots of eggs. I like idaho or yukon golds as my base (only cook till just off firm or all turns to mush), eggs, celery or something else crunchy like green pepper, Miracle Whip (not mayo!), salt, pepper and a squirt of good yellow mustard. Yep, still my favorite!
Mary Frances says
Thank you! Now this is interesting in that some recipes say to dress the potatoes when hot and others say when cold.

Great idea! I love my mother’s aunt Rose’s egg and potato salad recipe.
1. Boil 1 pound yellow new potatoes in their skins. Peel and chill.
2. Hard boil 4 eggs. Peel and chill
Dressing:
1. In a bowl put 1 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper.
2. Add 2 tbsp red wine vinegar, 5 tbsp light olive oil, 1 tsp chopped chervil, 1 tsp chopped chives, and 1 anchovy fillet, minced.
Remove yolks from hard boiled eggs and crumble into dressing. Cut egg whites into pieces. Cut potatoes into thin slices.
Mix well and serve chilled. Serves 4.
It’s simple and very good! Yum!

Thank you Nikki!! I LOVE the anchovy fillet added – what a great idea!!

My favorite recipe is very similar to Susan Chamlin’s, and it’s useful in my house because my husband frowns on mayo (too much cholesterol). So, I do the small red potato thing, but I throw in a olive oil and balsamic dressing to which I’ve added salt and pepper, while the potatoes are hot. All that’s then needed is a handful of chopped dill and scallions.
Mary Frances says
Thank you Margaret!! I like the dill idea with the salad type dressing! Very cool.

Stumbled across your blog and was lured in by the promise of great potato salad (a favorite), can’t wait to try your recipe. I love your blog title….when growing up we would always know if my mom put extra “love” into a recipe by how excited she got when she served it. Great memories!
Mary Frances says
Awww – that’s a great story. Let me know how you like my recipe but stay tuned for the winner here – and please submit your recipe!

as a russian, i vote salat olivier, all the way. although not a traditional “potato salad” per se, it is a creamy salad comprised mostly of potatoes.
boiled skinned new potatoes, broiled skinless chicken breast, minced green onion, green peas, pickles, and hard-boiled eggs chopped are all cut into bite-sized pieces. most russians use straight mayo as the dressing and garnish with fresh dill, but i have a great secret dressing is both healthy and ten times tastier. let me know if you are curious!
love the blog, by the way.

Wow – I would love to get this recipe!! Please send it over!

for you, my dear.
the recipe is barebones, so no amounts are listed. use your best judgement, but remember to let the dill shine and don’t shy on the black pepper. any questions, shoot me a message or a comment. best of luck!
