I’ve had so much fun writing a monthly spice column for www.Spice4Life.co.za based in Cape Town, South Africa, an “everything” site about life and all the good things it holds. I contribute an article each month about my favorite spice for their impressive audience of 2.9 million monthly visitors.
Since I was invited to contribute at the beginning of the year, with a debut on Valentine’s Day (how fitting for LOVE!) I’ve written about ginger, garlic, garam masala, sumac and now basil. Is there a spice you can’t get enough of as the days start to turn cooler? I’m not saying that summer is over, but this week is definitely not as hot as last.
Please help me choose my next Spice 4 Life topic. Your favorite spice right now? Shout it out!

I love saffron. It’s so good in paella (or any rice dish, for that matter), cream sauces, or just to add a subtle background flavor to a vegetable dish.

Melinda, great idea! I have a small jar sitting on my counter right now, just waiting to be used. I always find it funny how it’s red and turns things yellow! Thank you!

Cumin!!
Tammie says
Rosemary and Mint are two of my favorites…both perfect for the outdoor BBQ!
Mary Frances says
Tammie – I just realized this was you! I’ve never used mint on the BBQ. What do you do with it?
Tammie Pisarkiewicz says
Well, add it any beverage, of course. But you can also add it to any fruits you do on the grill. You can also try it with grilled brussel sprouts 🙂

Cumin. I love how it works with anything grilled and transitions nicely to fall veggies like butternut squash. My husband even uses it in his omelets.
Mary Frances says
Thanks everyone!! These are great suggestions. So far, cumin has the most votes!

My favorite spice is cinnamon. I put it in my coffee beans before I brew …love it on oatmeal , rice pudding
ravioli with butter and sage, apples and brie

Marie – Cinnamon on ravioli with butter and sage sounds divine! I have a ton of sage in my garden now. I’ll have to try that!
